~ MEET THE FAMILY! ~
Since the early 1950’s, Marguerite’s father, Robert single handedly operated a large dairy farm on the property. After about twenty years of operating seven days a week he made a difficult decision to switch to beef cattle. Sadly he sold his dairy cattle and began a new journey of raising beef cattle, which led to marketing natural beef straight from the farm to the consumer.
During those years of working feverously until dark, his daughter Marguerite was budding into a young entrepreneur herself. There are multiple advantages for a child to live and work on a farm and even as a younster, Marguerite embarked upon her own venture. She and her mother boarded and showed horses as well as offering riding lessons for a fee. This fee allowed her to show beef cattle and operate a 4-H horse camp and show on the property. From the profits of these ventures she was able to purchase her first car and pay her college tuition.
Her productive childhood was a success though she had her own personal hardships. As a newborn, due to delivery complications, she was pronounced legally blind but that didn’t deter her from pursuing her ambitions.
As a high school graduate she earned her college degree at North Carolina State University and her Masters from A&T State University. After graduation she delved in head first into a successful teaching career where, much like her childhood adventures at horse camp, she molded students into successful young adults. She led many state and national winning FFA teams, taught Animal Science, ran the school farm and aided in the operations of a registered and commercial beef cattle herd. Yet something was still missing, she often longed for the days of being home full time in her riding ring and
horse camp. After making a difficult decision Marguerite decided to embark on a new adventure and turned her beloved riding ring into a business and built a store on the very place she rode horses as a child.
According to Steve Fields, the husband of Marguerite and the father of Anna,“Life makes a big circle”and this has held true for our family. Steve was raised on a farm himself and as a teenager worked as a herdsmen for a beef cattle operation before moving on to become a very successful dog trainer. He trained all types of dogs for varying purposes including training them to assist the handicapped. Yet the beef cattle were and still are the backbone of our family. Steve's dedication and ambition instilled the drive and desire to own, operate, and show registered and commercial beef cattle. After working long days at the kennel he would come home at night and he, along with the entire family, would carry out the farm chores. On the weekends we would have meetings on how to build our herd through improving genetics and by offering the best nutrition, and healthcare possible. After twenty five years of running a prominent kennel Steve decided to add to the circle by joinging his wife Marguerite on a full time basis, owning and operating the store farm and florist and carring for their approximately 400 head of cattle.
There is nothing like being a farmer’s daughter and growing up on a farm taught Anna many things but most importantly the values of faith, family and hard work.
Anna was afforded many opportunities through showing cattle and as a child her main responsibility were caring for the family's show cattle which included daily care, grooming, feeding and mucking stalls. At the end of the season we would show and sell
our steers. While it was a bittersweet moment those were life lessons that will always be with her. The money from the cattle paid for Anna's car and college tuition to North Carolina State University where she studied Animal Science and Communication. The twisty turns in the road brought her right back home and back to the man who would become her husband. After the large task of planning a wedding, finding rental property and putting together the flowers, we decided we could do this for others. As the circle continues, we did just that and the store was erected and life began. Currently, Anna teaches Agriculture at Southeast, but she is never far away from the store, cattle and the show barn. It is our mission to teach our youth about the wonderful opportunities of Agriculture.
As for that wonderful man Anna married, he is still here! Brandon successfully works for Pfizer in the poultry health division. He fits our family like a glove since he shares our love of the show cattle. He works diligently with our beef cattle and manages the nutritional aspects.
For years people sent us animals that needed rehabilitation or to be “fixed”. We feel they come into our lives to “fix” us as we are the ones that are broken. There love moves us forward.
Welcome to Rocking F Farm our passion lies within our four legged friends.
